There are so many things to love about Chuck, but one of my favorite things on this show (and really any Josh Schwartz show) is the music. And I don’t just mean good music that accentuates a scene and is then forgotten… I’m talking about music that’s so great, you can fill your iPod with it. In fact, I love the music on Chuck so much, that when I found out there wasn’t going to be an official Chuck Soundtrack, I made my own! (Interested? Check back later in the week and we can help hook you up with that!)
The great music on Chuck starts pretty much with the first song in the pilot and it’s just been one great-music packed episode after another since then. The musical genius behind all these great songs is Music Supervisor – and long-time Josh Schwartz collaborator – Alexandra Patsavas. Whom you might also recognize from her music stylings on such shows as Grey’s Anatomy, Gossip Girl, Supernatural and the recently departed Life on Mars to name just a few.
Even if you’re not the typical mainstream music lover, the variety of music on Chuck is so vast that there’s a little something for everyone. In any given episode you’ll find a mix of dance, rock, pop, alternative and maybe even some classic rock. And the best part is that Alexandra Patsavas is queen of discovering and showcasing those little known gems that end up being the next big thing. Bands like Rooney, Modest Mouse, Death Cab for Cutie, Snow Patrol and The Fray have all received a big popularity boost after Alexandra featured them on one of the shows she works on. A few of the great bands that have been used on Chuck include: Bon Iver, the Prodigy, Sam Sparro, Beck, The Shins, Spoon and the Fratellis.
And it’s easy to track down all those great songs when you feel the need to hear them again. And again. And again. TV Show Music offers a fairly comprehensive list of songs and artists broken down by episode, and even lets you know where the songs were used in the episode, just in case you’re not sure which song you’re looking for.
Since my Chuck music-love began with the pilot, I thought what better way to introduce you to the awesome music on Chuck than to offer you the same introduction? So sit back and listen along while we take a little stroll through the music of the Chuck pilot.
We start off with a little “Cobrastyle” by Teddybears ft Mad Cobra while Chuck makes an awkward attempt to socialize at his birthday party.
Then we have one of my personal favorite songs “Into Your Dream” by Foreign Born that plays while Chuck and Sarah dance on their first date.
Then we’re back with a little more “Cobrastyle” by Teddybears ft Mad Cobra during the most hilarious ninja break-in at Chuck’s apartment.
Later in the episode, while Chuck, Sarah and Casey are frantically trying to disarm a bomb, we hear “Any Way You Want It” by Journey when Morgan calls to chat about chuck’s date.
After all the action’s over we get a lovely scene with Chuck sitting on the beach watching the sunrise and “A Comet Appears” by The Shins plays while Sarah joins him and they discuss everything that’s happened.
And that’s just the first episode! Imagine what else is in store. All you have to do is watch Chuck to see (and hear) for yourself!
Don’t forget to check back later in the week to find out how to get your very own Chuck Soundtrack!
