Review & Giveaway: Supernatural Season 3 Official Companion

Supernatural: The Official Companion Season 3Supernatural: The Official Companion Season 3
by Nicholas Knight

Did y’all hear me squeal with delight when Tom from Titan Books contacted me and wondered if I might be interested in reviewing Supernatural: The Official Companion Season 3. I’m pretty sure it was loud enough to be heard around the world. Or throughout the Central Florida area at least. I do love my Winchesters and nothing pleases me more than spending a night getting cozy with them.

But how is the book you ask? Pretty darn awesome.

Granted, it’s definitely for fans of the show but then I don’t know why you’d pick up this book if you weren’t a fan. Perhaps anyone writing a Supernatural spec script would find it helpful since it, like listening to DVD commentaries and reading interviews, gives you a small glimpse at the writing process for the show. I, however, am a fan and this review is going to be from that perspective.

For anyone not familiar with the companion books, they’re exactly what the title promises. They offer a little more in-depth look at the season and what shaped it along with seasonal character profiles and extra little tidbits. My favorite part of this book may have been the breakdown of all the music used throughout the season per episode. That’s a lie, I actually liked the quotes from the cast and crew best.

The foreword is written by Sera Gamble and we see a lot of what she tells us in her overview of the season reflected throughout the rest of the book. Season 3 is unique in that the Writer’s Strike cut the season short and changed how the season was originally planned. As I said, the book is full of quotes from the cast and the crew and I was pleasantly surprised with just how candid they were about the season. Eric Kripke wasn’t afraid to admit the season’s faults and where he think they went wrong. And from what I know of this season, I think they clearly took those lessons to heart going forward.

And, of course, it’s always fun to hear about the fun that was had on set and listen to the guys joking about their relationship with each other and what they get to do on-screen. I love knowing that some of the crew’s favorite episodes were also some of mine.

The book also contains several pages of full color glossy photos. Most you’ve probably seen but there were a couple I hadn’t come across before. The one thing I probably could have done without, though I understand why it was included, was the breakdown of Keith R.A. DeCandido’s tie-in novel that takes place during the season three timeline. I haven’t read the book so it’s not really about my opinion of the novel, it’s more that I don’t consider tie-in novels to be canon so I don’t like bundling it with information that is? Or maybe it’s just because I haven’t read it and have no plans to so those I’d rather have seen those few pages devoted to something else. Fans of the tie-in novel, though, are likely to enjoy hearing about how DeCandido came up with his story.

Probably the most bittersweet aspect of the book are the quotes from Kim Manners. He played such an important role in making this a show I could love and that’s never more evident when he’s talking about the show as he is here. It’s hard to believe he’s no longer with us but I’m glad this book another reason to remember him fondly.

In conclusion, this is definitely a must-read for Supernatural fans. It’s in bookstores now so check it out: Supernatural: The Official Companion Season 3

I love these books. :D You’re right about the tie-in novels not being canon, and I am surprised that they included it.

Rae Here: If I had to guess, I’d say it was partly due to it being a shortened season because of the strike, not nearly as many episodes as usual to cover in the book. Including the tie-in helped up the page count. I mean, it’s no biggie. I just skimmed those pages but it was kind of weird.

I’m creeping up on season three, as I’m halfway through S2 DVDs along with the current season. It’s making me crazy seeing the recurring themes. Looks like I’ll have to take a gander at the other companion books out there.

I really have been pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoy these companions. Nearly every season, I’ve been prompted to go back and rewatch and episode or two after reading about a detail or two that I missed the first time around.

Awesome. I think my favorite part would be the color photos. I haven’t read the novel either so I’m not sure about that part. I’d be interested in reading how the strike changed the direction of the season. Thanks.
