Tomorrow night sees the return of The Closer and premiere of Trust Me on TNT. I got an early look at the first few episodes of both and I liked what I saw so I wanted to be sure and give some very non-spoilerly opinions of both.
I know you Closer fans want to know what happens with Sanchez. Alas, you’re not going to find that here. Come on, would I spoil you like that?! Plus, TNT specifically requested that I not talk about it.
My overall take on the first two new episodes of The Closer is that the second episode, airing on February 9th, is better of the two. Not to say that the return episode isn’t good but the second episode had me on the edge of my seat and I love the story it seems to be setting up.
As for Trust Me, I feel like I’m in the minority in really liking it. Maybe it’s because I have absolutely no interest in Mad Men and therefore don’t care that Trust Me is the lesser of two shows set in the advertising industry? Or maybe I like Tom Cavanagh and Eric McCormack enough to see how the show goes? I don’t think that’s it, though, because it’s actually Monica Potter who plays my favorite character, an award-winning copywriter who is just starting at the agency. She’d drive me batty if I had to work with her but I love the way she balances out the other characters here.
Oh, I will say that the advertising ideas on the show are NOT all that great at all. If they’re not careful, they’ll fall into the same pitfall that Studio 60 faced. We aren’t going to believe these guys are great ad men if we only ever see them come up with lame ad ideas. I was able to ignore that in these first two episodes but I don’t know if I’ll always be that forgiving. That said, I still really liked these characters and I want to see more of their stories and I’ll definitely be tuning in to see more of the show.
So, again, tomorrow night. The Closer returns at 9PM and Trust Me premieres at 10PM on TNT.
