Early Look: The Closer & Trust Me

I got an early look at the first few episodes of both and I liked what I saw so I wanted to be sure and give some very non-spoilerly opinions of both.

I know you Closer fans want to know what happens with Sanchez. Alas, you’re not going to find that here. Come on, would I spoil you like that?! Plus, TNT specifically requested that I not talk about it.

My overall take on the first two new episodes of The Closer is that the second episode, airing on February 9th, is better of the two. Not to say that the return episode isn’t good but the second episode had me on the edge of my seat and I love the story it seems to be setting up.

As for Trust Me, I feel like I’m in the minority in really liking it. Maybe it’s because I have absolutely no interest in Mad Men and therefore don’t care that Trust Me is the lesser of two shows set in the advertising industry? Or maybe I like Tom Cavanagh and Eric McCormack enough to see how the show goes? Monica Potter, Eric McCormack, Tom Cavanagh in TRUST ME on TNT. (c) 2009 TNT/Turner Photo: Art Streiber I don’t think that’s it, though, because it’s actually Monica Potter who plays my favorite character, an award-winning copywriter who is just starting at the agency. She’d drive me batty if I had to work with her but I love the way she balances out the other characters here.

Oh, I will say that the advertising ideas on the show are NOT all that great at all. If they’re not careful, they’ll fall into the same pitfall that Studio 60 faced. We aren’t going to believe these guys are great ad men if we only ever see them come up with lame ad ideas. I was able to ignore that in these first two episodes but I don’t know if I’ll always be that forgiving. That said, I still really liked these characters and I want to see more of their stories and I’ll definitely be tuning in to see more of the show.

So, again, tomorrow night. The Closer returns at 9PM and Trust Me premieres at 10PM on TNT.

I have also been able to see the first two episodes of Trust Me and I agree with you on some points. I think the show is pretty good even though I think it could use some work. The storylines could be developed better and I do agree that they could work on the advertising ideas. Since I see promise in the show, I am going to give the show a chance to fix some of it’s problems.

I do disagree with you on the best character though. I think Tom Cavanagh’s character is the best. Maybe it’s just that I like quirky characters but I thought Cavanagh was the best of the cast. As a matter of fact if his character wasn’t on the show I would have probably given up on the show after the second episode.

Yes, I definitely liked what I saw enough to not be turned off by a few issues. Plus, it’s just the first two episodes, I have to give them some time to tighten things up. At least they gave me something that interested me and that’s more than I can say about most new shows lately.

Haha, oh, I didn’t expect many to agree with me on my favorite character. I’m not sure which of the guys I like better at the moment. I like the quirky-ness of Conner but Mason is the type I’m more drawn to… I think the truth is that I like them as a duo.

I watched the first episode of Trust Me last night, and I totally loved it. I am biased though, as I work at an ad agency.

In their defense (a bit), I think it is spot on. The reality is that not every ad campaign is that great, and not every client is sexy and exciting, and most of them aren’t risk takers. Now having said that, I know this is television, so that may not cut it.

Interested to see how it develops. I just hope it doesn’t fall into the trap of having the same tempo and resolution in each episode. You know – Connor comes to the rescue at the last minute every time???
