I know I haven’t talked about Psych in, oh, at least a day or so… But! The third season season starts tonight at 10/9c on USA and, since I got to see the premiere episode during my set visit, I’d be remiss if I didn’t tell you a little about it.
This probably goes without saying but I really enjoyed the episode. It was great to have Shawn and Gus back. We get to meet Shawn’s mom and there’s nothing about her that disappoints. Look out for the ending of the episode, it’s… good. Plus, there’s some great sight gags, jokes, and Lassiter stuff.
I will say, however, that this is one of the few episodes that didn’t open with a Lil’ Shawn flashback. If you haven’t been mainlining season two episodes like I was before watching, then you may not even notice it but I was a little thrown by the change in pattern. Of course, we ended on a cliffhanger last season so it made sense that’s where we’d pick back up. I’ll be interested to see if we go back to that established pattern in the second episode.
There’s also definitely more character development and exploration happening in this episode than we’re used to seeing. Again, I’m ok with that. The show has earned the right to go that direction and it’s kinda time. There’s certainly no lack of humor but I appreciated the inclusion of some more dramatic undertones. And, honestly, as much as I already love these characters, this just made me love them more. Or perhaps I should say it helped me to understand them more because there were some things that also bothered me. More on this in an after-episode discussion where I can bring up my specific character-based concerns… And I’m not talking about issues I have with the writing or things that affected my enjoyment of the episode/show. I’m talking about that thing where I get overly invested in the lives of fake people that live in that big box in my living room.
Annnnnnnnnnd, I should stop now before I say anything that spoilerish. Mostly I just wanted to tell you that I liked it so much that it’s been killing me to wait several weeks to talk about what happens. So you should watch and come back tomorrow so we can talk about it.
Psych, Tonight @ 10/9c on USA.
