The Beverly Hills 90210 Spinoff Logline

So, TV Tracker tells me that the CW has picked up the pilot presentation of the Thomas helmed Beverly Hills 90210 spinoff. But I think we all could have guessed that would happen after the news broke last week that the CW was considering the idea. Still, here’s the official logline that’s attached to the project as well as the folks involved (none of whom should be too surprising since they’re basically Rob’s go-to team):

Auspices: Rob Thomas (EP, W-Pilot), Dan Etheridge (EP N/W), Jennifer Gwartz (EP N/W)* , Danielle Stokdyk (EP N/W)* , Mark Piznarski (D-Pilot)
Logline: A contemporary version of the 1990′s FOX teen-driven soap opera. In this iteration, the main family consists of a grandmother who was a huge star in the 1970′s, her do-gooder son and his athletic wife who are in the their late 30′s and their two teenagers. Their sixteen year old daughter is an aspiring and talented actress and their adopted son is also sixteen, highly intelligent, but with lingering behavioral issues.

I’m curious what will tie back to the original show and I can’t deny that I like these people and what they do. Should be interesting to see what comes of it. I wonder what this means for Rob’s other projects. We already know ABC wants to see the pilot of the Cupid script he turned in but what about the comedy (Party Down) he was trying to sell? I suppose it never hurts to have as many irons in the fire as you can handle, eh?

I was too young to watch post of 90210, so maybe one of the kids teachers will be someone from the original cast. Otherwise, I’m so lost on it.

Hmmm. You know, from the sounds of that family description it oculd be Steve Saunders and co. His mom was a big star in the 70′s (the Hartley House) and Steve married… Janet? Janice? (We now know her as Victory on Lipstick Jungle) and they had a daughter towards the end of the show. I don’t know that the do-gooder and althetic descriptions apply though.

But perhaps the only connection will be the kids going to West Beverly High. And the zip code of course.

    Thanks for sharing the news.

Oh… just found a few more details here:

“The guy who gets hired as the new principal brings his family of four from Kansas to Beverly Hills. The principal, himself, graduated from West Beverly High School,” he said. “The grandmother — the principal’s mother — is a Julie Christie-like actress who is once again going into rehab.”

The principal is “reluctantly” moving back to his old stomping grounds and bringing his wife, son and daughter with him, he said.

“There is a plan for bringing back one of the cast members,” but he said he didn’t know which one because “we haven’t talked to any of them.”
