“You need me to make you a mixtape?”

It’s Friday. I’m staying at the office late because I’m behind on everything from answering emails to writing posts to getting freelance projects out the door and I know I won’t work on any of it if I go home. So naturally all I can think about is my drive down to Port St. Lousy this weekend and how I really want a new mix CD for the trip. But I can’t seem to find a good list of songs to include and that’s why I’m turning to you, my fellow TV junkies, for help.

Help me create the perfect “Memorable TV Moments” mix. Please!

In VERONICA MARS “Meet John Smith,” Justin gives Veronica the mix cd he made her.You can pretend your Peyton and we’re on our way to bail Mouth out of jail in Honey Grove (OTH, 4×17 – “It Gets the Worst at Night”). Or Noel cheering a friend up with a break-up kit (Felicity, 3×14 – “The Break-Up Kit”). Or Marissa bringing supplies to a run away Ryan (The OC, 1×02 – “The Model Home” and 3×17 – “The Journey”). Or Justin trying to woo Veronica with something to listen to on a stake out (VM, 1×03 – “Meet John Smith”). Or Sawyer trying to get into Kate’s pants (Lost, 3×17 – “Catch-22″). Or Chandler coming up with a last minute homemade gift for Monica… err, no, scratch that one. I could do without listening to Janice talk much less sing! (Friends, 6×17 – “The One With the Unagi”)

Every good mix has a theme and ours is memorable TV moments. Think of your favorite show and pick one of your most memorable moments in that show. Then tell me the song you think captures that moment. It can be the song that the show used or some other song that always reminds you of it. Try not to duplicate a song someone else has suggested but it’s ok to to pick a moment from the same show as someone else or, even, the same moment as long as you have a different song for it. And, though I’d like to try and avoid it, I am open to using multiple songs from the same artist/band.

Then, once everyone’s done making suggestions, I put them all together in one mix and post the full list with a little cover artwork. Plus, I’ll make copies for anyone who wants one. It’ll be our little TV mix CD to share!

Ok, now I’m just being goofy. Bring on the songs…

PS: Thanks to Jo for helping me “research” all those references to mix tapes on TV! I’m sure we missed some obvious ones so let us know if you can think of any we should have included.

You should not post this around me. I will come up with far too many choices, I feel.

Now I’m just going to have to think what must be in such a mix.

I’m another one who will have WAY too many suggestions for this… my whole life is a mix of songs I got off TV!

So, perhaps just a few fave’s of the moment…

    1. Goodbye to You by Michelle Branch, from the end of Tabula Rasa. I heard it all day (in my head) on Tuesday after you left.
    2. Dice, by Finlay Clay will always have me picturing Ryan running to Marissa on New Year’s Eve. (The OC)
    3. Eyes, by Rogue Wave brings me to the end of the Heroes pilot where they’re all seeing the eclipse and realizing things are about to change.
    4. Hear the Bells, by Mike Doughty. I really don’t think I need to tell you what this is from! Although, it has also been used on Grey’s.

And of course I could do this for days and not run out. Just let me know if you need more!

Along with Hear The Bells ^ , Sway by The Perishers has to be my most memorable song from Veronica Mars.

Nice picks, Jo! I love “Goodbye to You” but I wish I could actually get the acoustic version we hear on the episode.

Amy, “Sway” is one of my picks for VM too. “Lost & Found” by Adrienne Pierce is the other.

Although, weirdly, and this doesn’t count for the mix because it’s not one of my memorable moments… “The Telephone Hour” by The Teenagers (from Bye Bye Birdie) always makes me think of VM.

Fantastic, twisted and great TV minds this alike. I too have a TV mix tape. Here are a few of my personal favorites. I think a good TV mix tape is all about the memory it invokes, so my faves might not be yours.

Dawson’s Creek: I Don’t Want to Wait (Paula Cole) – Just the first few lines are all I need to bring me back to my happy place.

Dawson’s Creek: Fall from Grace (Amanda Marshall) – The Miss Windjammer Pageant just wouldn’t be the same without this upbeat ditty. I’d suggest Katie Holmes version of “On my Own” also featured at Miss Windjammer, but I think Tom burned all the copies.

The Office: Tiny Dance (Elton John) – What’s a post Dundies celebration without this song? It’s one of the only non-karaoke songs ever featured on The Office

The Office: But if it’s karaoke you want, than look no further than Dunder Mifflin. I’m going to go ahead and suggest the Dolly Parton/Kenny Rogers duet of Islands in the Stream. Although I prefer the Michael Scott/Jim Halpert rendition myself. But there’s always You’re Body is Wonderland (John Mayer) as performed by Michael Scott and Andy Bernard. Or perhaps a little “Take a Chance” on me is more your speed. I hear ABBA does a version but I like mine by Andy Bernard and Here Comes Treble.

Alias: God Put a Smile on Your Face (Coldplay) You know how I know I’m a TV addict? I listen to Coldplay and it reminds of good ‘ol Sydney/Vaughn snogging. Yes, this is the song playing while they did the deed. Lucky gal.

Veronica Mars: One Way or Another (Blondie) Blondie made this one famous but the annoying blonde in the hamster wheel made it her own when she dedicated it to the Tritons. A moment of silence for Veronica Mars.

    Hope that helps.

First off I’m not a big fan of music montages because they usually just feel as if the writers are too lazy to write any dialogue and just throw in some cheesy pop song from the radio at the end of an episode and tell the actors to look serious for three minutes. With that said here are a few memorable songs that actually added something to an episode:

It Takes Two – Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock (My Name Is Earl)
Don’t Stand So Close to Me – The Police (Veronica Mars)
The One I Love – David Gray (Rescue Me)
Adelaide – The Old 97’s (Veronica Mars)
    Wonderwall – Oasis (Lost)
Private Eyes – Hall and Oats (Veronica Mars/Knights of Prosperity)
One Week – Barenaked Ladies (Veronica Mars)
Cat’s in the Cradle – Harry Chapin (Knights of Prosperity)
What’s Left of Me – Nick Lashey (Veronica Mars)
I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) – The Proclaimers (How I Met Your Mother)
Read My Mind (Like Rebel Diamonds Remix) – The Killers (Friday Night Lights)
Devil Town – Tony Lucca (Friday Night Lights)
Free Bird – Lynyrd Skynyrd (My Name Is Earl)
My Before and After – Cotton Mathers (Veronica Mars)
Bad Day – Daniel Powder (Veronica Mars)
Hopelessly Devoted to You – Olivia Newton John (Pushing Daisies)
Look After You – The Fray (Journeyman)
Freedom ’90 – George Michael (Eli Stone)

And of course there are these theme songs:

    The Jeffersons
    Dukes of Hazzard
    Greatest American Hero
    The A-Team
    Wonderfalls

And I don’t know if this counts but earlier this year Friday Night Lights used The Bravery’s Believe in their ads which is the best use of a song in any promo.

    Ok, Rae..here you go!

Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah (either The West Wing of The OC)
Chasing Cars – Snow Patrol (Grey’s)
Forever Young – Youth Group (The OC)
Work It – Rupaul (Ugly Betty)

I’m blanking on any songs from Bones right now.

I can’t seem to think of anything else.

    Harper says:

I’m terrible at remembering songs. I do agree with Goodbye to you though because I can’t even think of that episode of Buffy without remembering the song. And I don’t want to wait is perfect for Dawson’s Creek even though it was used as a theme song. I choose Sway or Bells for my VM song.

So basically I’m just agreeing with choices already made.

Now if you needed some musical theatre songs, that would be different.
