Wasting Time with a TV Meme

I know I should be talking about the few new TV episodes we’ve got at the moment and, yet, I’m wasting my time doing memes like this and thinking back to TV of days past…

Wow: 5 TV Moments You Still Remember (And Probably Won’t Forget)

  • The end of BtVS’ “Becoming: Part 2″ from Buffy catching sword with her bare hands (“Me”) to her tears when she realizes she has to drive the same sword through Angel to save the world and then watching her friends from afar before turning and leaving Sunnydale while “Full of Grace” plays.
  • The moment in BtVS’ “Anne” when Buffy stands up for herself and the rest of the slaves, “I’m Buffy. The Vampire Slayer. And you are…” and her jumping up on platform with the ax ready to fight as the guards swarm around her.
  • Pacey recognizing that Joey is wearing her mother’s bracelet in DC’s “The Anti-Prom” and, when she’s surprised he remembers the day she found it in such detail, he replies simply, “I remember everything.”
  • Joey in her flannel PJs sitting with her legs over Pacey’s and shaving the beard off his face the night they are both stuck in K-Mart overnight in DC’s “Castaways.”
  • Veronica and Logan getting outed in VM “A Trip to the Dentist” from the look on their faces to the look on everyone else’s faces to Logan putting out his hand to her and telling everyone they’re dead to him if they’ve got a problem with her. Add to that their happy skip to the poolhouse and then Veronica’s discovery of the camera and the end of that episode is just one big memorable TV moment for me.

That’s What She Said: 5 Quotes That Still Resonate

  • “It’s true what they say. Time is an unreliable narrator. History gets rewritten in small ways with each passing day. I can’t swear this is exactly how it happened, but this is how it felt.” (Joey, Dawson’s Creek)
  • “Growing up sucks. Not all kisses are magic, and most boys do not live up to your expectations, but there are those times when everything, I mean love, romance, relationships, it all falls together perfectly and it’s incredible. It’s those moments, no matter how depressingly few and far between, that make growing up worth it.” (Joey, Dawson’s Creek)
  • “Bottom line is, even if you see ‘em coming, you’re not ready for the big moments. No one asks for their life to change, not really. But it does. So what are we, helpless? Puppets? No. The big moments are gonna come. You can’t help that. It’s what you do afterwards that counts. That’s when you find out who you are.” (Whistler, BtVS)
  • “Once upon a time there was a girl who lived all alone in a horrible cave so far from home it made her chest hurt. And every day in that horrible cave, the girl tried to figure out a way to escape. None of her plans ever succeeded, of course, and she’d almost given up hopin’ when one day, just like in a fairy tale a handsome man rode up on a horse and saved her, and took her back to his castle. Now you’d think that was the end, wouldn’tcha? Dumb old fairy tales and their happily ever afters. But see, the minute they got back to the castle, the handsome man went away again. And even though she didn’t mean to, didn’t want to, high up in that castle the girl just built herself another cave. Hoping he would save her again. But you can’t save me this time. Can you?” (Fred to Angel, Angel)
  • I just wanted to say… it was worth getting taped to a pole.” (Wallace to Veronica, Veronica Mars)

Your 5 shows you can’t get enough of are all shows I can’t get enough of. I might swap out Alias for Gilmore Girls except they both had a couple of seasons I could have done without. I’m not sure what my 5th show would be, but the first four – yes, yes, yes and yes.

    Rae says:

Yea, that’s why Alias is listed last. I had a hard time coming up with that 5th one. I might have listed GG but I was trying to pick shows that I often want to rewatch episodes of even if not entire seasons. I have all seasons of GG on DVD but I rarely actually have hankerings to watch any specific episodes. I could maybe put Firefly but I don’t think the series was long enough for it to qualify in that category. There’s one or two shows this season that I think will eventually make it onto the list but, as of right now, they’re in the same boat as Firefly.

Wow, you may start some sort of TV blogger fight with your “5 Shows You Just Can’t Get Into.” Friday Night Lights AND 30 Rock? Way to pick shows with intense blog followings!

Hahaha, just kidding…I’ve never even seen Lost (on purpose–I don’t have time to get sucked in!), so clearly I’m not one to talk. Totally agreed on Gossip Girl, anyway. And I’m trying really hard to not watch American Idol this season!

    Rae says:

Haha. Well, I may actually just start a fight with my very own contributors with those choices but that’s exactly why I included them! I’ve tried to get into both shows and I just can’t seem to do it. I’m hoping that someday, when they aren’t so popular and raved about everywhere (probably raising my expectations a little too high), I’ll finally see what I’m missing right now.

Lost can be controversial, though, so I can see people agreeing with you on that one. People both love and hate that show where as I really only see love for FNL and 30 Rock. I just get embarassed for the people on AI so I don’t think it’ll ever manage to suck me in like it does everyone else.

Aww. I remember all 5 of your memorable moments too!

Angel would top my list of 5 characters to do… but Mal and Dean would both be on there!

I know you hate people telling you to watch shows you aren’t into, but I really think you need to give Gossip Girl another chance. I agree with your issues at the beginning, but I swear it gets better and sucks you right in. It wasn’t until after the 3rd ep. that I got into it, but then I enjoyed it more each week. I mean, if you can watch OTH… you should at least give GG another try. ;)

    5 shows I watch over and over…
    Buffy
    Gilmore Girls
    90210
    Firefly
    The O.C.

Oddly enough, few of these are shows I would list as my top shows. Shows like Heroes & Lost would be listed as top shows, yet I rarely re-watch the eps even though I have the DVDs. Interesting…

Those are amazing quotes (I only recognize #5). Any chance you could add where they’re from? :)

(Man, that BtVS S2 finale moment just brought me back…that really was incredible. :)

    Carrie says:

I’m totally going to do this on my blog! I love it.

LOVE your memorable TV moments. Great stuff.

I also think you should identify where those quotes are from. I vaguely recognize most but can’t place them.

  8. 8
    Rae says:

Carrie & Eolivet: Done! The quotes have been identified for you…

I even bolded the sections of the full quotation that are what really still resonates to this day. I wanted the full quotes to be represented because it’s hard to get the full effect without the whole thing but those are the bits and pieces of the quote that will randomly pop into my head every so often.

Also, I can’t believe I forgot the one quote from Buffy that to this day actually resonates the most. I’m not going to change my answers above but, if I were, I’d probably drop the second DC quote and replace it with this one from BtVS “Earshot,” “My life happens to, on occasion, suck beyond the telling of it. Sometimes more than I can handle. And it’s not just mine. Every single person down there is ignoring your pain because they’re too busy with their own. The beautiful ones. The popular ones. The guys that pick on you. Everyone. If you could hear what they were feeling. The loneliness. The confusion. It looks quiet down there. It’s not. It’s deafening.”

    Rae says:

Jo: Heh. I’m not surprised Angel would be at the top of your list! ;)

Hey, I don’t hate people telling me to watch shows I’m not into! At least, not until they’ve done it so much that it’s more like pressuring than suggesting. I will try to give GG a chance again now that they will be re-airing the episodes. I don’t know if I’ve had enough time to get over whatever it is that stops me from liking it but I promise I’ll try!

I had a hard time with what shows I watch over and over because they aren’t necessarily my top shows. I mean, I know the top three listed are definitely my favorite all-time shows but I always struggle with whether I consider Angel to be one of my top shows and yet I can rewatch those episodes a thousand times. (Side note: Did I tell you Mona just asked me to lend her my AtS DVDs! Ha, she’s finally given in to the DB hotness.) I think Alias doesn’t belong on the list because I really don’t watch those episodes much. I have a few episodes and action sequences that I just love and I can rewatch over and over again but, for the most part, I don’t tend to stick in Alias DVDs when I want to watch something. However, I couldn’t really identify a show I do that with… I do find that I can rewatch sitcoms time and time again. Like when nothing else is on TV, I’ll turn to a Friends or Seinfeld rerun. And sitcom reruns are my first pick when all of my shows are in reruns on particular night. Like, if it’s The Office vs Supernatural reurn on a Thursday night, I typically watch The Office episode. Perhaps because those don’t require me to concentrate on the TV like a drama does?

Is it cheating to add more to my lists in the comments?? I had a hard time picking only 5 memorable moments. I really tried to pick out the ones that my memory goes to first but I want to mention that the VM episode I used for my VM memorable moment also has a scene I wanted to try to work into one of my lists and couldn’t. Maybe I should have added a Top 5 Scenes? Because both the scene between Duncan and Veronica at his door followed by the Wallace and Veronica scene from when he runs out to her car to when she’s sitting on his bed are among my top TV moments of all times. Look! Visual aids: Scene 1 & Scene 2

And then this convo between Wallace and Veronica:

VERONICA: This is so not an “I told you so,” but do you see why I kinda keep things to myself? I think I can go home now.
WALLACE: Maybe you should just stay here.
VERONICA: No, I feel better. Of course, you feel worse.
WALLACE: No, I don’t care about me. I just wish I could do something. Or say something.
VERONICA: You don’t have to say anything. That’s kind of the good part.

    Just Jody says:

Oh, I did have all 5 quotes right! I wasn’t 100% sure if the first one really was Joey in Paris, but that was my guess. (That is the quote right? From Paris?)

I totally forgot about Friends in my list of shows I watch over and over. That should probably be on there. I own all 10 seasons despite the fact that you can pretty much catch a re-run ANY time you turn on the TV. From looking at that list, it seems that lots of continuity (surprise) and really well-developed characters are key to getting me to watch a show over and over again. Cheese does not seem to be a factor. ;)

Did Mona watch Buffy or is she starting with Angel?? I can only assume one would do that if they were a Bones fan? (And there’s a show I could never get into.)

You musn’t judge GosGirl until the after the third episode. Because I was right there with you before that… “these spoiled brats have absolutely nothing to offer, and this show is so unrealistic.” I was completely prepared to quit it after the obligatory third viewing. But then the end of ep. 3 totally hooked me. The characters do get more layered, and the show becomes more about the relationships. B&S are my new BFF OTP.

Aww. Your V & W quotes are making me want to go home and watch VM S1.

    Spadada says:

Jody and I should really start covering GG and 30R once the strike ends. Maybe we can each take one or do back and forths like L & V used to do for The Office on “Neptune Online.”

I can’t answer these questions right now because it looks like it takes more time than I have to give, but I loved reading your responses and everyone’s comments.

    Jessica Rae says:

Hi. I love your name, since it’s my middle name :) (I’d love it anyway.) And I frakking love your TV taste. Like, in an obsessive way.

Pacey Witter, Noel Crane, and Dean Winchester? All in my top ten TV guys I’d want to do. Angel and Spike have to be on there, but so does Logan from Veronica Mars, and Jess from Gilmore Girls – so you see that I cannot just list five. But those are my top 7, I’ll go with 7. ( I’ve always been such a Noel Crane fangirl, I never liked Ben that much!)

Every single TV moment you listed is one I remember clearly, luckily Buffy, Dawsons’ Creek, and Veronica Mars are some of my top fandoms. I was just watching Vmars season 3 earlier tonight.

House I love, finally – but was slow to get into. 30 Rock I’ve discovered and am loving. Gossip Girl I watch occasionally, wanting to like it as a guilty pleasure, but it fails even to draw my attention for that.

And Robin on HIMYM – I so agree, so just doesn’t add to the show in any real way. :X

I also love Alias and Angel. This is kind of like a soul-matey quiz, huh? I’m trying to think of some favorite shows you didn’t mention…Firefly? No, you mentioned Mal. Okay – Wonderfalls? Wonderfalls is amazing. And Dead Like Me. If you like shows that deal with supernatural elements (as I believe you do based on liking BTVS, Ats, SPN…) then you should give these a try.

While i do agree with most everything…From your moments you cant forget. It was Becoming Part 2! not Graduation Part 2. Graduation was an awesome episode though, with blowing up the school it really felt like a proper ending to their high school years.

    Rae says:

OMG, Mel, you are so right! I’m an idiot. I can’t believe no one else caught it either. D’oh.

I did want to include, “Fire bad, tree pretty” and “We’re taking a moment” as memorable moments/quotes that resonate but I just didn’t have room. I think I need to start doing a regular “Another Memorable Moment” entry each week.

    Lainey says:

One of my all time favorite quotes from BtVS comes in the form of a tyrade Spike says to Buffy (and others) about her relationship with Angel: ” Your not friends, you’ll never be friends. You’ll be in love untill it kills you both. You’ll fight, and you’ll shag and you’ll hate eachother ’til it makes you quiver but you’ll never be friends. Love isn’t brains children, it’s blood. Blood screaming inside you to work it’s will. I may be loves bitch but at least I’m man enough to admit it.”

Same here as beth, if any of you guys happen to know the name of that song, the one on the dvd, not the one that aired (that one is “Juliette”) please post it, I’ve been looking for that song like forever now. Thanks!
BTW, the 5 guys I’d do, no doubt

    Pacey Witter
