TV Advent: Day 20, You’ll Shoot Your Eye Out

RTVW TV Advent Calendar Day 20It was revealed in recent holiday sound off (coming soon, as in tomorrow), that several of our contributors have never seen A Christmas Story. How’s that even possible?! I’ve seen it at least a hundred times and only about ten of those times were intentional. It seems like you’d have to go out of your way not see it. Right?

Well, just in case there are others out there who haven’t seen it, I wanted to share a couple of the reasons you should definitely catch at least one of the airings during TBS’ 24 hour A Christmas Story marathon on Christmas Eve.

Title card from the movie A CHRISTMAS STORY.

Even if you’ve never seen the movie, you’ve most likely know that it’s best known for the quote, “You’ll shoot your eye out kid!” All poor Ralphie wanted for Christmas was “an official Red Ryder, air carbine action, two-hundred shot range model air rifle!”

Ralphie dreaming about the Red Ryder that he wants for Christmas.

Instead he kept hearing…

Then there’s the infamous scene where Flick can’t resist the TRIPLE dog dare from Schwartz (NARRATOR: “NOW it was serious. A double-dog-dare. What else was there but a triple-dare-you, and then, the coup de grace of all dares, the sinister triple-dog-dare.”) and finds out exactly what happens when you stick your tongue on a cold pole…

Flick gets his tongue stuck to the pole when he gives in to the triple dog dare.

And, of course, there’s the very special version of “Deck the Halls” that the movie introduced into our lives. If you confused by the holiday Pysch Pysch Out in which Jules gets frustrated at everyone for singing “Deck the Halls” wrong, take a listen to the original, “Deck the hor with Bar of horey, Fa ra ra ra ra ra ra ra ra!”

Finally, I had to pass along this link because I know all of you want your very own full size Leg Lamp! Because, really, who doesn’t?

BONUS: Still not convinced to watch the movie? Fine. Watch this 30-second re-enactment performed by bunnies instead.
