On the set of SPN: Take 3, How It Happened, Who’s Who, & Thank Yous

I was going to try and get everything else about my trip to the set of Supernatural into one post. HA! As I began organizing my thoughts and thinking about what I had left to share, I realized there’s way too much for one post. So, you’re getting a few more… at least. To start, I figured I should go back and make the post I should have made first. Where I explain how this set visit came about and who else attended as well as thank everyone who made it possible.

How’d you get to go?
Honestly? Luck. That’s what got me invited to the Supernatural Bloggers Day. Well, that and my obsession and need to talk about TV. As most of you know, I was invited to the Veronica Mars Bloggers Day last year. That’s where I met Holly, a Warner Brothers publicist. It just so happens that she covers both Veronica Mars and Supernatural along with all of her other shows.

True story: The first thing I noticed about Holly when I met her? That she was wearing a Supernatural jacket. In fact, I think that was the first thing I told [info]cadhla about my VM set visit because I coveted it so.

But, I’m getting sidetracked… Through Holly I met her assistant, Winson. The one thing I remember about the first emails I exchanged with Winson? That I was all “yeah, yeah, sure I’d love to interview the VM cast at Comic-Con but, tell me, is there going to be a Supernatural panel?” So, I guess you could say Winson might have had a clue that I loved Supernatural even if Veronica Mars was all I talked about.

Fast-forward to the last week in February (February 27th to be precise) and me getting an email from Winson inviting me to visit the set of Supernatural. I’d like to be pretend I was all “oh, that’s nice” but instead I was “OMG! OMG! OMG!” I mean, getting invited to the VM set was a fluke… I never thought I’d get invited to another set, much less Supernatural!! So, yeah, I almost didn’t believe it was true which is kind of why I hadn’t posted about until the day before I was leaving. Well, that and the date was up in the air for a while so I didn’t want to post prematurely.

But it happened. It really happened (even with pictures sometimes it doesn’t feel real!) and I have Holly and Winson to thank for that. They are awesome and there are no words for how grateful I am to them for giving me the opportunity. Once again, they’ve reminded me of what I love about this industry and why I want to work in it.

I’ve seen myself referred to as a “reporter” in a few places and I want to clarify that I’m not. If I were this website would be a drastically different place… possibly a better one. Certainly it’d be full of more critiquing and less blind adoration. No, no, I’m just a girl who loves TV and likes to talk about it (read as: gush about her favorite shows). For some reason and luckily for me, people seem to enjoy reading what I have to say and that has led to some fantastic opportunities for me. So, for everyone who asked, I hope that covers the “why” I got to go. Luck is really the only explanation I’ve got.

I also want to make it clear that this was a Warner Brothers arranged event. For all those who keep asking how you can arrange a visit to the set… I have no idea. As far as I know they don’t offer public tours. I don’t even know where the set is. Yes, I’ve been there but our very lovely driver, R.G. Miller, was the one behind the wheel. I couldn’t find the studios again if I tried. If you’re planning a visit to the Vancouver area, the best I can do is tell you about a few of the locations they discussed filming at during our tour (I’m sure these are actually available online somewhere). Trust me, I wish I could somehow arrange a set visit for every fan who wants to go!

Ok, so who else got to go?
Here’s the one photo we got of all of us. Good thing Holly found these stairs and insisted we do the Brady Bunch pose, eh?!

From top to bottom: Oscar from BuddyTV, Dan from duckyxdale.com, Kevin from TV Squad, Eric from IGN, Marjorie from MeeVee, Daniel from the TV addict, and me!

It was a pleasure to meet everyone (some for a second time). As Dan said, I think it was a good mix of personal bloggers and people representing some of the better known TV sites. Hopefully this will expose more people to the world of Supernatural and help boost our ratings a bit!

And, finally, the big list of Thank Yous…
There are so many really and I’m sure I’m going to leave out people. Not that I harbor any illusions that they are reading and will feel slighted but I never like to forget to thank anyone. So, the blanket statement first… Thanks to EVERYONE at Warner Brothers and in the production offices of Supernatural who helped make this set visit possible. And thanks to EVERYONE in the production offices and on the set of Supernatural who took time out of their busy days to show us around, talk to us, and let us interrupt their work. It was a fabulous experience and truly a treat for a huge fan of the show (me).

Moving on to the specifics… thanks to Winson and Holly at WB for making it all happen, to RG Miller for waiting forever for me at the airport and being nice and witty while shuttling us all over Vancouver, to Cyrus Yavneh (line producer) for acting as our tourguide through the production offices and giving us actual pictures from his office wall, to Jerry Wanek and everyone else in the art department for answering our silly questions and letting us take pictures of your offices, to Lou Bollo (stunt coordinator) for sitting down with us for a few minutes and answering questions, to Lesley DeHaan (fan coordinator) for letting us storm her desk area and take pictures of her working, to Russ Hamilton and Paul Lougheed and the rest of the locations staff for telling us about scouting for locations, to Diane Widas for giving us a tour of the upstairs wardrobe area and talking to us about costume design on the show, to Shannon Coppin and Jeannie Chow for letting us invade hair & makeup and talking to us about their passion for the show, to Grant Lindsay and Darcy Arthurs and Ivan Hayden for showing us the FX reel and showing us how the different effects come together and what it takes to add FX to episodes, to the rest of the FX crew for putting up with us stomping through their office while they worked, to Kim Manners (Executive Producer/Director) for taking time out of his busy schedule to talk to us and answer questions and letting us watch while he directed a scene, to Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki for taking a break during shoot to talk to us and let us take pictures and for letting us watch they worked, to everyone on the food services staff who fed us lunch and various other snacks throughout the day, and to Ben Tucker (PA/Cyrus’ Assistant) for making sure we saw everything and taking care of us throughout the day.

And, of course, anyone else I may have missed including Samantha Ferris who had to put up with us invading her food services space to the woman who told me she liked my shirt while passing me in the hall to the guy on crew that we teased for being able to eat in the same area where manure was being used as the soil in a graveyard.

Next up? My favorite parts of the day and behind-the-scenes photos.

Well, I’m not surprised… they are pretty good. We bought some in the actual Cupcakes store and people kept eying them in the bag on the way back to the hotel. ;)

Hey lucky lady! Don’t downplay the part about how your dedication to the promotion and success of VM, along with all those hours talking about the shows online led to your being offered the first set visit to VM. It’s so awesome that there’s such a great reward for being a true fan. :)

Aww, you must be at home today, eh? I didn’t mean to downlplay it! Still, there are lots of other people who do the same so I think luck has a large part to play… at least as far as being “found” in the first place. :)

Sounds like you had a great time back in april visiting the set you are super lucky. I was just wondering where I might find a link to the rest of your report and images. I’m an aspiring costuming designer who would love to get a glimse at the wardrobe tour if you have any images. Thanks :D
