On the set of SPN: Take 2, Talking with J2

So… I’m skipping all around in the various reports of my SPN set visit. I haven’t even given you a list of the people who attended or thanked the people who were kind enough to arrange this event but I will get there. I promise!

Technically, we can’t call that last post a report because I didn’t give you any information other than that they got the postcards and have them displayed in the office. We talked for awhile with Lesley (the person you see pictured in the midst of those photos) who is in charge of going through all of the fanmail that the show gets. So, she’s the one you should include a thank you note for next time you send something because she’s the one who makes sure they see what you send. (An aside: For anyone reading who put together or helped with the birthday gifts for Eric and Jensen, I mentioned it and she said they had actually just arrived that day. Just in case you were wondering if they had gotten there! I’m not sure if both were sent at the same time or what. I didn’t have time to ask her to elaborate which is why it’s getting thrown in as an aside instead of posted about like the postcard wall.)

But now it’s time to move on… and I figured I should jump right to the part everyone wants to hear about first: Meeting the boys. Like I said before, we were there while they were filming an actual scene so our meet and greet with them was fairly short. No worries, though, watching them film their scene for over an hour definitely made up for it.

Jensen was the one we were actually introduced to, they were taking a break while the crew re-blocked the scene (moved the cameras around to get film from a different angle) and Jared had disappeared for a moment. This is what I remember from meeting Jensen and shaking his hand… he said my name twice. Man. I’m such a fangirl! (Shaddup, peanut gallery.) I just listened to my recording of our Q&A with them and it was the first thing I heard. He was doing that thing socially smart people do when they repeat the name of the person they’ve been introduced to and then move on to the next person. When he got to me he repeated my name (“Rae”) and then paused for a second and said, “Hi, Rae.” The logical side of my brain insists on pointing out that this is a rather common occurance when people meet me (few people are used to see a girl when hearing the name Rae) but the fangirl prefers to shout, “He said my name twice!!” Thankfully, the fangirl in me can’t actually be seen so I just smiled and shook his hand.

Anyway, we had a few minutes to ask questions and answers and snap a couple of quick pictures. I’ve transcribed the Q&A as best as possible below. There was lots of sound in the area so there are times when I can’t hear what was being said on my tape. To make it easier, I’ve omitted the names of those who actually asked the questions but it was a mix of everyone asking. (I know, I know… I had like a thousand questions to ask them for you guys and I don’t think one of them got asked but things were moving quick.)

Hmmm, ok, the transcript. Well, we’ll skip over the part where Jensen jokingly asked if we had any problems for customs which naturally cued everyone to (once again) make fun of me for getting stuck there for over an hour. I swear I had my hoodie zipped up so they couldn’t see my “I Hate Killing” t-shirt. It can’t be blamed for the hold up!

I was very impressed with both guys. They are both very articulate and comfortable when speaking to us. Of the two, Jared is definitely the more outgoing… at least in the sense of loving to jump in and tell a funny story. Not that Jensen didn’t also joke with us but it felt like that’s more Jared’s thing than his. Either way, I can definitely say that they are great guys and now I feel kind of bad for not really loving Jared on GG. It was the character, I swear!

Ok, ok, you don’t care about my opinion… Note, there are a few spoilerish comments here. Nothing that gives too much away as I’m wouldn’t be allowed to post that info if I had it and also because the guys were being very good not to say too much. However, we did discuss one of Jensen’s scenes in the finale. We don’t even address what it was (because we didn’t know) but there’s enough there to give you an idea of what it might entail. I just wanted to warn the true spoilerphobes out there. I’ve put those pieces behind spoiler code so everyone else can read the transcript without fear of learning too much. Just highlight those sections if you don’t mind having a vague idea of what’s coming up in the finale. And, without further ado, here’s the transcript:

Q: You only have a few more days left for the season, right?

JENSEN: [big relieved smile] Ahh, yes. It’s been a long haul.

Q: Overall, how has it been during the second year?

JENSEN: Well, obviously it’s better. It’s a much more well-oiled machine than the first season. The first season you really try to get all the jitters out… the second season you hope it’ll be a much smoother ride and you hope you don’t fall into that sophomore slump that a lot of other shows do. But I think we’ve done pretty well this year. I’m pretty happy with what we’ve done.

Q: Yeah, we got to watch some of that rehearsal where you guys were having some fun.

JENSEN: [laughs] Yeah, you know, we’re very professional on this show. Even to the bitter end, we definitely don’t want to have any fun.

Q: [PA] said you had a pretty tough day yesterday? A big emotional scene?

JENSEN: I did. Jared just laid there with his eyes closed. Jerk. Yeah, I had some pretty heavy stuff. Probably the most emotional stuff jam-packed into one scene. It was pretty heavy… I was pretty done by the end of the day.

Q: How many times do you… like how many takes in that situation?

JENSEN: Well, in a situation like that after reading the script, I went up and sat down with Kim [Manners] in his office and this was the only scene I wanted to talk to him about. I was like, ‘What are you plans?’ because he is diligent in his homework. I mean, this is a guy who has so much prepared. He is a huge believer in preparation for an episode. I knew that he had all the shots lined up and had blocking… you know, blueprints of the room lined out. I wanted to go up there and just be like, “Look, man, you’re gonna have to help me out on this scene because I’m not going to be able to do it over and over and over again. I won’t have it, you’re going to start getting repeats after five.” So, he said, “I have four different set-ups.” And I’m like, “Are they all close or are some wide?’ He’s like, ‘No, no, they’re all close.” [we laugh] I talked to him and convinced him to shave it down and just use the one close-up that he was going to use. So, he did and I ended up doing it in three/four takes in that camera set-up. At the end of the day, I think it was about four or five takes including the other two set-ups.

Q: You and Jared seem to get along really well on set and obviously it’s just the two of you most of the time. Are you very thankful about that?

JENSEN: Very appreciative, very thankful, yeah. We definitely know how fortunate it is — the chance to work with someone who you get along with. We’ve both been on shows and on projects where not everyone gets along, where somebody’s got a temper or an ego but we’ve been very lucky and appreciative of the fact that he and I get along very well on and off set. We work well together and we hang out off set sometimes too, whenever we get time off set. But, yeah, it’s definitely a big luxury that we get along.

Q: Does it help that you guys are both from Texas?

JENSEN: I’m sure it’s got something to do with it!

Q: How much Texas is still left in you guys? You’ve been up here for how long?

JENSEN: Actually, it helps me having him around because, you know, his accent kind of keeps mine going and mine kind of keeps his going. So, we kind of feed off each other in that aspect. But it definitely plays into it. Just the fact that we have very similar upbringings, very similar family lives. His parents remind me of my parents and so on and so forth. And we have a lot of other common stuff too.

Q: Do you find that you guys have a lot of input creatively?

JENSEN: Yeah, we’ve definitely been a little more collaborative with Eric [Kripke] and Bobby [Singer] and Kim [Manners] and Cyrus [Yavneh] and all the department heads. It’s definitely felt like we get more of an input. Because, you know, we put just as much into the show as those guys do. Not a lot of cast members can say that on the shows they’ve worked on but Jared and I are here all day, every day. I can count on one hand how many days off I’ve had this year. So, it’s really a solid effort from all of those people. From the directors to the producers to the writers to the actors. If I’ve got issues, I call Eric directly and say, “Hey, man, I want to change some lines.” Or, like I said, I went up to Kim’s office and asked, “Can we change these shots up? I’d really like to add a wide shot in case I explode and blah blah blah.” So, creatively, yeah I think it comes from all over the place and everyone is very welcoming to it too. No one tries to one up the other person or be like, “No, no, I don’t like that idea just because I don’t like YOU.” There’s none of that. It’s a very very collaborative set.

Q: Can you tell us, story-wise, about where you’re going here at the end of the season?

JENSEN: Uh. I don’t know, how much can I say? [he checks with our PR guide at this point] Storyline-wise, this is it. This is the big show. This is what we’ve been waiting for for two whole seasons. This is all the problems that the entire show in motion are culminating in this one episode. I think that’s very indicative of who Kripke is, he doesn’t like to keep those long drawn-out storylines with loose ends. He likes to tie things up and create new problems and more motives and stuff like that which I really like. There are a lot of shows out that kind of keep that continual rolling, never solving problems… So, this episode we’re going to deal with the demon that took Mom; we’re going to deal with Dad’s death; we’re gonna deal with making deals with the devil; we’re going to deal with Bobby, Ellen, Jo, the people in the Roadhouse; we’re gonna deal with the occult and devil’s traps and all of the stuff that’s been playing into the season. It’s all coming together in this final episode. Not to say it’s wrapping everything up because, in doing so and wrapping up that storyline, so much else is created which is really cool. It’s definitely going to give us somewhere to go for season three or however long we go.

Q: Do you prefer the shows that kind of tie into each other or do you prefer the stand alone episodes?

JENSEN: I prefer the ones that follow a common thread. I prefer the ones that move the mythology forward. The stand alone ones are great and sometimes they’re fun… [we're interrupted by Jared coming over]

JARED: Sorry, guys!

JENSEN: Ok, I’ll stop talking.

JARED: Uh, oh, what’d I walk into?

JENSEN: Forget anything I said. Everything I said was a lie.

JARED: Yeah, that’s probably the best thing y’all can do…

JENSEN: He was just asking whether I like the stand alone episodes or the ones that have more of a…

JARED: Like to film or like to watch?

JENSEN: I was saying that I like to film the ones that move the stories forward, the ones that…

JARED: We’re like opposite.

JENSEN: Really?

JARED: I like to film the fun ones because it’s a break from the drama and the tears and the crying which I love to do and I love to watch. Those are my favorite to watch but it takes so much out of you. It’s like – this sounds stupid but it’s like when you have to work out your legs. It’s so much harder than working out your arms but the next day you’re like, “Ah, I feel good that I just did that.” but on the day you’re like, “Oh, God, this is going to be a big day and I’m not going to walk around.” Because during a lot of the mythology ones we’re talking about Dad and Jess and Mom and the Demon and it’s so… it’s imperative to the storyline that we do these but then we do ones like “Hollywood Babylon” [Note: This is the one that airs in mid-April.] where like he’s a PA and I’m kind of teasing him and making fun of him. Or “Tall Tales” where we’re just goofing around and wrestling and being goofs. I think just because the workload – this sounds terrible! – just because the workload is standable and lighter. But there’s definitely something to be said about filming the mythology episodes at the end of a hard day.

JENSEN: And that’s what I was saying. Especially if you take into consideration yesterday. I went home and I was like, “I put in a really hard day today.” And just that immediate gratification, you know, is not something you always get day in and day out on a film set. Sometimes you come in and you do a light scene or you do an action scene but, when you really put your heart and soul into something and you really dig deep for something that exhausts you emotionally there’s a certain gratification that comes from that.

Q: When they first paired you guys together did you just feel that it was right?

JARED: Yeah, I think so. It really was pretty quick. We both – I mean, I say this all the time – we have similar interests and similar hobbies and similar manners. We’re both… I’ve definitely worked with my share of people who – and I know Jensen has as well – but it’s all about drama. Like if there’s not some sort of conflict going on in their lives or on set then they’re just not happy. But he and I are both…

JENSEN: [jokingly] Actors are stupid!

JARED: Actors are stupid. I don’t like to hang out with them.

JENSEN: I don’t condone them.

JARED: Something’s always got to be going on but he and I are both like, “You know what, we’re both here to make a project that we’re passionate about, let’s get our work done.” There are no rumors going around on set. We have fun on set. There’s no… It’s remarkable, being two guys from Texas who would probably be going for the same roles, I feel no competition with him. I feel like he’s my biggest supporter and I know I’m his biggest supporter. I am so happy after he just nails a scene. I’m like, “Dude. Rockin’.” And he does the same for me and gives me credit where he thinks I deserve it and likewise. But also very constructive with criticism. Like, “Hey, you have a better one in you. Don’t get lazy here or don’t do that here.” It’s like, “Absolutely.” Whereas someone else could say it, especially another actor you’re working with, and you’re like, “Are you the director now? Or the writer or producer or something?” But coming from him it’s like, “Ok, cool.” He knows me, he’s seen my acting more than any other person in this world because I’m acting with him constantly. And vice versa. I’ve seen him do hours and hours and hours and hours and hours of acting.

JENSEN: I can tell when he’s faking a line and it’s just something to be able to have that luxury to call each other out on it – to be able to keep each other accountable, essentially – is really cool. I mean, it helps the show out.

Q: How much involvement do you have with the fans? Online and offline? And, followup question after that, do you [Jared] get recognized more for Gilmore Girls or Supernatural?

JARED: It depends on the arena, as far as getting recognized. Like if I’m in a place with a lot of little girls or grocery store, it’s for Gilmore Girls. But if I’m in an older establishment, like a bar, it’s a bunch of guys usually it’s Supernatural. And, also, I’ve met a lot of girls who are fans of Supernatural.

JENSEN: As far as the Supernatral sightings, you get called out… I’ve had more recently.

JARED: I like Supernatural sightings…

[a brief moment here of laughter - which means I can't hear a damn thing on my tape - where they joke about "sightings" and Jensen pretends to be a fangirl with, "It's Jared!!" and a little hands to the face scream.]

JENSEN: It’s becoming more and more. Like with me, just the other night, I usually wear a hat if I’m going to walk around town and I’m like, “I’m not going to wear a hat, no one’s going to bother me.” I walked out of my hotel and the first people I see is this drunk couple stumbling down the street and the guy goes, “Hey, there’s that guy from that show.” [Jensen does a hands up in the air "Oh, great" gesture here.] So, it’s the more the show… you know the show has been on for two years now, two seasons, so I think it’s a little more out there.

Q: Do you guys go online, though, and go to the blogs and the wiki and all that junk?

JENSEN: I’ve checked out the CW… I know Kripke is more in tune with that stuff than we are.

JARED: Oh, Kripke can recite… the URLs.

JENSEN: We’re like, “Which ones do you go to?” and he’s like, “Well, there’s this one, this one, and this one…”

JARED: On set sometimes, like right now when we have turn arounds, we’ll flip on the Internet and check out some…

JENSEN: What are the good ones? We should be asking you guys…

JARED: What did I read the other day? One of them I read the other day just made me cry with laughter… what was it? Oh, I think I was reading about Jensen or something. They were like, “You know, if he went to Denmark, they’d say, ‘What’s your name?’ and he’d say, ‘Jensen.’ and they’d say, ‘No, you’re first name.’ and he’d say, ‘Jensen.’” It was about how his name is such a common last name. No, I’m not kidding you, it went on and on and on. I was like, “Oh my God, they’re talking about–”

JENSEN: [interjecting] Nothing.

JARED: There’s like no point.

[I missed the next few questions here due to background noises on my tape... they were about playing rock music on the set, which they don't do, and the "Hurt" video that was shown at the TCAs. They commented on loving those things but say it wasn't their department. Talk then turned to the FX trailers where we had just spent a good amount of time watching the guys at work.]

JARED: I mean, NERD ALERT. They’re great.

JENSEN: They’ve got a really great set up. [after Jared's comment] It’s the Nerd Tank.

JARED: I wouldn’t say it if, any day, you couldn’t walk in there to see them wearing shirts with like the Apple logo on it or that say, “I’m a nerd, who are you.” They’re like, “Whatever, we sit in a room and stare at fourteen computer monitors ten hours a day. We’re nerds.”

JENSEN: Those guys, they’re awesome, man. They put together some amazing stuff. We’re really lucky to have them.

JARED: It’s fun to go over there and just see them tool around with it. One time I went in there and there were seven different monitors and they were all playing a different episode of Supernatural. I was like, “Dude, too much me!” But I like seeing them creating – we went in during the clown episode and saw them creating the clown face that would come out…

JENSEN: Oh, the morphing man?

JARED: Right, the morphing one.

JENSEN: We walked in there when they were kind of setting everything up and Ivan [Hayden] starts going through and starts explaining it technically to me and I just turned and walked away. [all laugh] It’s like, “Not even a chance.”

Q: Do you guys fear clowns now? Or less? Or did you fear them before?

JARED: I love…

JENSEN: I hate ‘em.

JARED: What’s funny is that, in the episode, Sam hates clowns and Dean is like, “Whatever, they’re clowns.”

JENSEN: Just the opposite in real life.

JARED: It’s just the opposite. Like I had a clown cover and a clown blanket and ten clowns on my bed and whatever. But I love “IT” and…

JENSEN: Yeah, I watched Stephen King’s “IT” way too young and that ruined me. Nope, nope, clowns are out. And dolls too, from “Playthings.”

JARED: That was spooky. Not a lot of things get me but walking into the room of dolls.

JENSEN: Walking in with a bunch of dead eyes looking at you… you’re just like, “Ahhh.”

JARED: Every now and again one of them missing one eye. There was one that didn’t have either eye and Jensen was like, “Dude, you have to touch her eye sockets.” And I was like, “I don’t want to, what if something gets me?” We couldn’t force ourselves – it was just a doll sitting there but we couldn’t force ourselves to do it.

JENSEN: Yeah, pretty much. [to one of us joking about them egging each other on to touch it] A bunch of pansies. [to Jared's remarks about not being able to force themselves to do it]

JARED: You’re like, “I can’t do it, I can’t do it.” Then, as soon he turns away, you’re like, “I just did it. You didn’t see it but I just did it.”

[Note: There was one last question about if it's weird to have to act when there's nothing there and Jared said it definitely was, especially at first. He mentioned that they're getting a little more used to it now, especially after having seen a few episodes of how it all comes together but it's weird when you're doing it and there's nothing there to react to... Unfortunately my tape cuts off at that point because the camera guys were done and they needed to get back to work.]

I also managed to snap a few shots of Jensen and then the pair of them after Jared joined us. These aren’t great. I blame the smoke in the air and my not wanting to leave my spot next to Jensen to get a better frontal view. Ah, well. Check out the TV Addict’s picture of the boys or wait a few days for the rest of the reports to start popping up. I know others had better photo angles than I did. Here are some of my photos, click on the link below to view all of them and the larger versions.

To say I’m a little jealous right now would be an understatement! Oh man, I was kind of hoping that the season finale rumor spreading around wasn’t true, but from those spoilers, it seems accurate. Dammit.

Well, they better have a good reason to explain it in the third season AND have both Jared and Jensen in the show.

LOL,they are silly dorks, scared of the dolls and all :D Thank you so much for this,I love reading fan reports! This whole thing kinda threw me away, I had no idea some people were able to go to the set. Do you know if there are other people (not including tvaddict) who might make their own reports? I’d love to read them.

I don’t blame you for not wanting to move from Jensen’s side :D If I had been there the security guards would have had to drag me away *g* And thanks for the pics, boys look lovely as always <3

Thanks for posting this. It was a nice read. Jensen seems so well mannered and professional. Your questions were great too. Not some of the same ‘ol stupid, boring questions a lot of interviewers ask.
I like that they occasionally go online. It’s nice that they care what the fans think. It shows respect for their audience.

And now I REALLY want to see that season finale, even though I know it will leave me on the raggedy edge waiting for the premiere of season three!
