What can you do?

I haven’t said much about H. Katrina. That is partly because most of my time away from LJ is spent discussing it. It’s also partly because, truly, there are no words to express my sadness for the people in the areas of destruction.

I think about last year and all the damage we had. It took Orlando months to clean up. The devastation from Katrina is a thousand times worse than that. I can’t even imagine what it is like there and my mind balks at the thought of what it’ll take to recover from it.

After last year, I know how important it is to get help from others in these times. Please, do whatever you can help out with relief. If you can, donate $$$ to the American Red Cross (be sure to specify that you want it to go to the Hurricane 2005 Relief). If you’re concerned about the pets and animals affected by this disaster, consider donating $$$ to the Humane Society of the US (click on the banner below to donate). If you can’t give $$$, try giving blood instead. There is not enough blood to go around and it’s needed now more than ever.

The uncle of one of my coworkers lives in New Orleans and has lost everything. His home has been demolished and he’s been told he won’t even be able to get back to it for 2 months. He, obviously, no longer has a job or income to help him get through. In an effort to help him out in whatever way possible, the office is pooling our money for him. It feels good to be able to help someone directly. Talk to the people around you. Find out if they have loved ones in need and see if you can do anything to help even if it’s just lending an ear to someone who needs to share their worries.

ETA: My morning radio station was doing a Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund Drive and raised over $80,000 since 6AM this morning. I am in awe and so proud of everyone in Orlando right now.
