Trapped

I’m feeling very trapped today, much like the caged bird in Maya’s poem below.

I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings
by: Maya Angelou

A free bird leaps on the back of the wind
and floats downstream till the current ends
and dips his wing in the orange suns rays and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage
can seldom see through his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with a fearful trill
of things unknown but longed for still
and his tune is heard on the distant hill
for the caged bird sings of freedom.

The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with a fearful trill
of things unknown but longed for still
and his tune is heard on the distant hill
for the caged bird sings of freedom.

Maya Angelou is one of my favorite poets, and this is one of her best. Have you heard the version she does, reciting the poem to jazz music by Branford Marsalis? It’s fabulous.

My favorite of her poems? Still I Rise.

I keep a volume of her poems and Ferlinghetti’s on the shelf above my desk.

    Love them like pancakes.

thanks for posting this – a great way to start the day.

I have heard that version. It’s what was in my head this morning as I thought of the poem. I just love the imagery in it. No matter how many times I reread it, the images are just as vivid and take my breath away.

I like Still I Rise as well… especially this part:

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.

Actually, you posting this and making me think of Still I Rise was just what I needed. I was feeling a bit like that bird but feeling a little more confident now because I can rise despite the person/situation making me feel that way.
