The Librarian is returning to TNT next month and this time he’s tackling the curse of the Judas Chalice. Though they had no idea of my enjoyment of this series of TV movies, TNT was kind enough to send me a screener and I’m happy to say fans of the previous two movies will enjoy this newest installment.
The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice finds Flynn (Noah Wyle) in New Orleans trying to stop the nefarious plot of a former KGB member and rescue a kidnapped professor (Bruce Davison) all with the help of a beautiful and mysterious chanteuse (Stana Katic). And, naturally, we get plenty of time with Judson (Bob Newhart), Charlene (Jane Curtin), and the Sword of Excalibur! Ooh, and we also get a look at an entirely new section of The Library plus a hint at some of its mysteries.
All told, it holds up well in the series. If you weren’t a fan of the first two movies, you aren’t going to be a fan of this one either. But for those of you, like me, that like the bookish Flynn and his adventures in knowledge? I think you’ll be very pleased his latest.
That said the first twenty to thirty minutes of the movie are a bit slow and only tangentially related to the rest of the movie. While the introduction works as a set up for why Flynn ends up in New Orleans, it could have easily been cut in half giving us more time with the meat of the story. So, despite having some funny moments in that first half hour, it isn’t until Flynn heads south to New Orleans that the story really picks up the pace and gets fun.
There’s some fantastical elements in play but then aren’t there always in these movies? I mean, if you can buy the Sword of Excalibur as Flynn’s best friend, then you can probably buy into the idea of the notorious Prince Vlad Dracul making an appearance. Right? The effects were well done. Not quite theater quality but impressive for a TV movie. And, I’ll admit it, I just love Noah Wyle as the reluctant but smart hero, Flynn.
We’ll talk more as we get closer to the movie but, for now, remember The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice airs Sunday, December 7, at 8PM on TNT. Followed by the premiere of TNT’s newest series, Leverage, at 10PM. Much more on that series, which I really like so far, to come.
