Words can not express how much in love with Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog I am… You know it’s a Whedon-penned production when I’ve already got a dozen or so quotable lines written down and I’ve only watched it once so far. And, umm, the first part is only a little short of 14 minutes long. I might have to add Zack and Jed to the list of Whedon men whose brains I adore…
I want to talk more about it but I don’t want to spoil anything! So, what are you waiting for? GO WATCH ACT I!
Neil Patrick Harris was made to work with Joss Whedon. No, seriously. I can see how Joss thought he was perfect for the part. The blog part of Dr. Horrible definitely has a hint of the Barney Stinson that blogs about him. There aren’t many people who can pull off actually using “BTW” while talking out loud but NPH can and does. Plus, the man is just a damn fine actor. His facial expressions here? Perfect. And that mumbling scene at the beginning? Fantastic! He really disappears into every character he takes on and that’s not an easy feat. Felicia Day is also so very perfect for the role of Penny. Felicia is beautiful, no doubt, but she’s got a sense of frailty about her that humanizes her. It makes us believe she could actually be attracted to Dr. Horrible’s Billy (B. Horrible? Too funny. Joss likes William’s and likes to make them evil, eh?). Which is to say, if I can buy two people as a couple, I’m more likely to get invested in one having a crush on the other. I definitely felt for Dr. Horrible when Captain Hammer came flying in and knocking the girl of his dreams off her feet, you know, literally. And y’all know I love Nathan Fillion. What’s to dislike? Even when he’s playing an egomaniacal super-hero I love the man. Captain Hammer throwing back his hair? CRACKED ME UP. Haha. That whole scene wasn’t my favorite and it’s weird to feel more sympathy for the “evil” character than the “good” character so I think that could explain why. However, I’ve now watched a few more times and that scene makes me laugh more and more each time. Just proves what I knew to be true anyway… Joss’ work just gets better the more you watch. Can we just talk about how fucking awesome this “Internet” product is? This is the perfect example of why I think quality will win out every time. Sure any Joe Schmoe with a video camera can make movies for the web but this is the kind of stuff I want to see. It’s why I think production companies are being short-sighted if they aren’t looking into what they can do with the Internet. Throughout history the method of delivery has gone through many evolutions but at the end of the day people just want you to tell us a good story. I have to get to work so I need to stop babbling now. I leave you with some of my favorite lines so far… Oh, and don’t forget you can also buy the acts or a full “season” pass on iTunes.
Ok, it’s way too early for me to do a good job discussing that so I’m going to go back to Dr. Horrible and how much I fucking loved the camera shot through the glass doors of the dryers in the laundromat. LOVED IT. It’s the little things that please me. Like the cut back to Dr. Horrible during dream dance sequence with Penny and he’s moving his shoulders to the music. Also really loved that first song. It was perfectly timed – just as Dr. Horrible’s video blog was getting to be a bit too much we cut to song that literally does make you want to sing-along. “That’s the plan. Rule the world. You and me. Any day… With my Freeze Ray I will stop…”
Totally worth the $3.99 you’ll pay: ![]()

I watched it about four times last night and woke up with the Freeze Ray song in my head. “Wednesdays and Saturdays, except two days last month you missed the weekend. I mean, if that was you…” (Paraphrased, but that scene with Penny and Horrible is my favorite part.)
I think this is my favourite quote so far:
P: What are you doing? DH: Texting. It’s very important or I would stop.
Gretchen: YES! I can’t get Freeze Ray out of my head. I have to keep watching because I can’t stop singing.
Jo: That is a great one. I will definitely be using it from now on… Mona is constantly asking me what I’m doing on my iPhone. Now I have the perfect response.
They’re all great though. That whole scene with Dr. Horrible and Penny is my favorite, just like Gretchen. Everything about it is great… love the way he’s distracted by his mission and Penny at the same time.
I lied. I also like the laundromat scene. I can’t pick!
Haha, I’m so obsessed. I had to type the whole first part of the convo out…
P: I know you.
Dr. H: Hello. You know me? Cool. I mean, yeah, you do. Do you?
P: From the laundromat.
Dr. H: Wednesdays and Saturdays except twice last month you skipped the weekend. Or, if that was you, could have been someone else. I mean, I’ve seen you. Billy… is my name.
P: I’m Penny. What are you doing?
Dr. H: Texting. It’s very important or I would stop. What are you doing?
Oh yay! I’m so glad it’s already available on iTunes! I wanted to watch it again, but the website is too busy!
I wanted the season pass to work last night, but this morning was good enough for me.
However, I will need to watch again to fully enjoy the fun.
Is it warped that if I get married, I want the guy I marry to be able to sing the ‘Freeze Ray’ song to me? HEE.
Not in my world, Anita!! Haha. I’d fill my wedding with songs from Joss Whedon musicals if I could…
Words simply can’t express how much I loved this. Musical theatre, combined with satire, combined with actors who are 100% committed to their lines (and even a hint of winking at the audience would destroy this) and . . . . there simply are no words.
I adored this and yes – the dryer doors opening one right after the other, combined with his mumble and I love the air -maybe my favorite moment. Also NF with the hair on top of the van. Hee.
Just everything. I loved everything. Thank you Joss.
I knew you would love it, Pixi! And, yes, NF with the hair was fabulous!
