I had my first red carpet experience last night! Granted, it wasn’t the Golden Globes or anything, it was a press event for one TV show, but US Weekly and Entertainment Tonight were right there next to me, yelling to the stars of Nip/Tuck (“Julian, over here!” “Dylan, give us some eye contact!”) so it felt like a pretty big deal to me.
Plus, FX went all out. Inside the Hollywood & Highland Center, a mall above the famous Kodak Theater, they built a replica of the McNamara/Troy Los Angeles office. They even hired an actress to sit inside the waiting room and read a magazine during the event. And thanks to the wonder of holography, if you look inside the window, you will see the docs unwrapping a woman’s bandages.
It was amusing watching the actors peer inside the glass at the holograms of themselves. They really were having fun, as were the hundreds of screaming fans behind the velvet ropes. And both guys looked absolutely flawless. Julian looked especially cool in his dangerously pointy snake skin shoes.
Due to time constraints I had to share interview time with two other bloggers, but since we had been standing on the red carpet together for over an hour at that point we were already quite friendly and didn’t mind too much. We made a plan to each ask one question and held our breath as the actors behind Drs. Sean McNamara and Christian Troy approached and politely introduced themselves to us.
Julian McMahon: Ramblings of a TV Whore dot com? [chuckle] Is that for real?
Me: It is. It’s my friend Rae’s site. I’m her representative. I’m more of a TV slut.
[Yes. That is what I said to the very charming actor behind noted villains Cole Turner (Charmed) and Victor von Doom (Fantastic Four). I blame Rae. Before I can embarrass myself further (by calling myself a TV Hussy, perhaps?) MK from Pop Bytes jumps in with the first question.]
Popbytes: Who has been your favorite guest star to work with out of all the seasons so far?
Dylan Walsh: Oh, I wouldn’t pick one, that’s rough. We’ve had amazing people come on the show. From Vanessa Redgrave to Jill Clayburg. It’s been one of the most gratifying parts of doing this type of show. And they get the chance to play characters not just coming on as publicity. This year we have Oliver Platt, Bradley Cooper, Lauren Hutton.
Popbytes: And Rosie’s coming back.
Dylan: Rosie’s coming back! We love Rosie. She’s great.
[This is where I try to get Julian to comment on the rumors about Sandra Bullock guest starring this season (since the two actors worked together on Premonition), but he is much too savvy.]
Julian McMahon: Alright, Ramblings of a TV Whore dot com… [gives me the "you're up" sign]
Me: (to Dylan) So you go to LA and this guy follows you. How’s that going for your character?
Dylan: Great! It frees us up a little bit so that we can get off some of those older storylines. And out here [the plastic surgery capital of the universe] we’re a little fish in a big pond so it doesn’t go so easily. Mostly this year, to be honest with you, it’s just more fun. It’s funnier and it’s a little more fun.
MK has seen the first two episodes already and he agrees.
Me: And you guys are your own bosses again.
Julian: In one way we are and in another we’re slaves to everybody else.
The camera crew from A Socialite’s Life takes the reins.
Lisa Timmons: So now that you have been playing these plastic surgeons for so long, do you find yourself looking for flaws everywhere you go?
Dylan: No. [considers] No. I do feel like I could perform a surgery though. Which is sick if you think about it. No, I don’t see flaws at all. Not at all.
MK adorable geeks out about the first two episodes, we thank them for talking to us, and they are whisked away do it all again with someone else. The other bloggers leave shortly after the actors, but I am still reveling in my first red carpet experience so I just stand there bemused for a few minutes. I thank Kristy from FX’s media relations department for inviting Rae and letting me come in her stead and skip off excited to watch the premiere episode of Nip/Tuck‘s fifth season this Tuesday at 10 PM.

Go Kelley, it’s your Nip/Tuck day! Great job!
Kell, you rock! I love Dylan’s comment about how he does feel like he could perform surgery. That’s awesome.
Great write-up! As for Dylan saying he thought he could perform a surgery…that reminds me of Alan Alda on the Craig Ferguson show last month…he got diagnosed with some condition or other, but he was basically nodding sagely to his doctor because it was one of the medical terms they had used on M*A*S*H all the time. Hee.
This is a really shallow question, Kell, but did you try the phone?
Excellent recap, and I’m glad you had fun at the event.
Wonderful report and how exciting! I felt like I was there with you. Hee – on the TV slut comment. Hee, hee!
I didn’t try the phone, Roz. I read the whole thing about the messages and whatnot but in the excitement I forgot to pick it up.
And yes, Harper, “Hee” is right. Like Rae, I can laugh at myself.
I love the ‘TV slut.’ You may have embarassed yourself, but he’ll TOTALLY remember you. Awesome.
Hey, cool beans! Your interview actually made me excited for the Nip/Tuck premiere, which I have sort of been going back and forth about watching. 22 episodes this season, right? I’m used to the 13 or 16 they normally do, and last season really dragged for me. It sounds like you got to see the first two episodes? What did you think?
I am glad that reading this got you psyched up for the new season. I haven’t watched in awhile (Dirt and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia are my FX addictions) but after going to this event, I am really excited too.
I have not seen the first two episodes yet. (I wish! I’ll have to get on Rae to make sure she gets us on the list to receive screeners next time.) But the guy next to me on the red carpet saw both and really enjoyed them.
And yeah, looking like a full broadcast season this year: 22 episodes. But I heard that Ryan Murphy is conceiving it in three parts divided up between the scheduled hiatuses. (Sound familiar? Hopefully N/T does it better than VM did.)
I don’t actually watch Nip/Tuck, and I still found this really interesting. Great job K! And lucky, lucky you to be able to see the dreamy Julian McM. in person! I think I may have fainted.
